The Irish Guards
The Freedom of the Borough was conferred on The Irish Guards in June 2022. The award was in recognition of their exceptional service, dedication and courage. It reflects the high appreciation of the long, honourable and close association existing between Ards and North Down and the regiment.
Following a formal conferment ceremony, officiated by the Mayor of Ards and North Down, Cllr Karen Douglas, and in recognition of receiving the award, the regiment held a parade and drumhead service at Conway Square, Newtownards, on Saturday 25 June 2022. The parade was led by the Irish Guards' Mascot, Turlough Mór, who is known as Seamus to his colleagues.
As part of the programme marking the Conferment of the Freedom of the Borough, the Regimental Band of the Irish Guards also performed a static musical display at the McKee Clock in Bangor on Friday 24 June 2022.
